Removing the Distractions

Hearing from God is not about Him speaking more; it’s about us removing what’s blocking our ability to listen. Just as a student must create a focused environment to effectively study for an exam, we must cultivate a spiritual atmosphere that allows us to hear from God. Without the right setting, learning becomes ineffective just as our ability to discern God’s voice is hindered when distractions crowd our lives.

In Numbers 33, as the Israelites prepared to enter the Promised Land, God commanded them to drive out all the inhabitants:

“then you shall drive out all the inhabitants of the land from before you, destroy all their engraved stones, destroy all their molded images, and demolish all their high places; you shall dispossess the inhabitants of the land and dwell in it, for I have given you the land to possess it.”

Numbers 33:52-53 (NKJV)

This command was not just about claiming land it was about removing anything that could hinder their relationship with Him. The idolatry and sinful practices of the Canaanites would have distracted Israel and led them away from God’s voice.

The same principle applies to us today. If we want to hear from God clearly, we must be intentional about eliminating distractions, influences, and strongholds that compete for our attention. By clearing out the noise, we create space for His presence, guidance, and peace.

1. Identify the “Inhabitants” in Your Life

Just as Israel had to confront the nations in Canaan, we must address the things that occupy space in our hearts and minds. Ask yourself:

  • What habits or influences might be dulling my sensitivity to God’s voice?
  • Are there distractions such as busyness, entertainment, or negative relationships that I need to eliminate?
  • Am I allowing compromises in areas where God has called me to be set apart?

2. Clear the Spiritual Clutter

God instructed the Israelites to tear down the idols and altars of the Canaanites (Numbers 33:52). Similarly, we need to eliminate anything that has taken precedence over God in our lives. This may involve:

  • Setting boundaries with social media, television, or other distractions.
  • Letting go of toxic relationships or negative influences.
  • Making space for God by committing to daily prayer and Bible study.

3. Cultivate a Spiritually Restful Environment

After the land was cleared, Israel was able to settle in the place God had prepared for them (Numbers 33:53). In the same way, when we eliminate distractions from our lives, we create an atmosphere of peace and spiritual clarity that allows us to hear from God. This involves:

  • Spending intentional time in quiet reflection with Him.
  • Filling our lives with His Word, engaging in worship, and practicing prayer.
  • Being obedient when He speaks, ensuring that our hearts remain open to His guidance.

We humbly pray for the strength and courage to fully commit to overcoming all obstacles that prevent us from receiving the fullness of Your promises. Help us to eliminate any idols, negative influences, and sinful patterns that may hinder us from experiencing Your abundant blessings. Grant us the wisdom to discern what needs to be changed and the power to overcome any challenges we face as we strive to align our lives with Your perfect will. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
